Top Toddler Toys for Christmas 2013

We can no longer avoid it, Christmas time is here. Last year was easy because our son was still a baby and my daughter was pretty easy going with whatever Santa brought her. Now she’s beginning to tell me things she wants and our son is older and playing more actively. With that I’ve decided to just to go ahead and compile the top toddler toys for Christmas this year. You will notice, however that I did not mention too many electronic toys. I tired to skip most of those and added things that I would actually get for my children because when the toy does less, the child does more.

If you’re like me then you’re out of the loop with what toys are hot right now. There’s a game my daughter saw on TV advertised that she has been persistent about getting that I’ve never heard of. Hopefully this list will provide some insight and ideas for gifts to get the little ones this year that have educational value and will not disappoint.

Toys for Babies and Young Toddlers

These are all toys that are suitable for young toddlers under 3 years as they do not pose a choking hazard. It’s so hard to find good toys for active babies that don’t contain small dangerous parts!

Fisher-Price Little People Wheelies Zig the Big Rig
Fisher Price WheeliesWhat little boy doesn’t enjoy pushing around cars and trucks? I find this truck just too cute. He talks, lights up, and makes different sounds as well as animated moves. What’s pretty cool about this dump truck is that it is designed to hold the Wheelies cars (sold separately) in the back and when you press the top button it releases the side and the cars zoom on out. The truck comes with one Wheelies car and is suitable for toddlers ages 18 months+.

Kidoozie Nest and Stack Bucket
KidoozieNesting and sorting toys are a classic favorite among babies. They help encourage development and they’re easy for little hands. I really liked this bucket because it features several different options. It comes with stackable cups in assorted bright colors and shapes that babies can sort into the designated shaped holes in the bucket’s lid. I also like the idea the idea that the cups and shapes can be stored in the bucket when they aren’t playing with them. It’s made for toddlers ages one and up.

Fisher-Price Animal Sounds Zoo
Animal sounds zooI really like the Fisher-Price toys (can’t you tell) because they create great play for babies and toddlers that also encourage motor development and creativity. This is so neat that it features animals in 4 different habitats and recognizes them when placed on the designated red paw to state its name and the sound it makes. There are several different activities that kids can do from pushing the polar bear down the slide or swinging the monkey from the canopy swing. It’s so cool I would even play with it (with the kids, that is). Suitable for kids ages 18 months to 5 years.

TOMY Pic N’ Pop Ball Blaster
ball blasterSo here’s a pretty neat toy for little walkers. It launches balls with the push of a button and then picks them as your toddler rolls over them with the toy. It’s like a modern-spin on those classic push toys with the little balls that would pop inside a dome. It helps to motivate your toddler to walk and cause and effect. The ball blaster comes with 5 balls and is designed for toddlers 18 months to 5 years.

Big Hugs Elmo
hugs elmoThere are so so many Elmo toys now it makes it hard to choose one (we already have the Dance with Me Elmo and Tickle Me Elmo), but this Big Hugs Elmo is one of the latest ones that are out right now. He does different things when your child moves him around, sings, plays pretend, dances, but the main feature is that he hugs you back when you hug him. Designed for kids ages 18 months to 4 years.

Toy for Children 3 Years and Up

These are some of the top toddler toys for christmas of 2013 designed for children older than 36 months. It was tough trying to find things that weren’t all electronic but these made the cut and will make great gifts.

Gymnic/Rody Inflatable Hopping Horse
Hopping horseI remember just a few years ago they used to have those big bouncy balls with the handles for kids. Now they have these cute inflatable horses that children can bounce on. These are made with durable vinyl that is latex-, BPA-, and Phthalate-free. Kids can hop on them for hours of fun while helping them learn balance and coordination (and utilize their never-ending energy so they’ll sleep better!) They come in different colors and are designed for children 3-5 years.

My First Purse
my first purseMy daughter would love to own this. I try to stem away from the extra girly things that way my son can play with them too as he gets older, but every girl needs a purse. It comes with all the accessories a gal needs including a wallet, debit card, kid-safe mirror, pretend lipstick, keys, and of course a toy cell phone. It’s cute and allows your little diva to be just like mom with purse in hand. It’s suitable for kids 2-3 years.

Fisher-Price Medical Kit
doctor kitToysRUs actually lists the Doc McStuffins brand on their top 15 list for Christmas 2013, however this one by Fisher-Price is more gender-neutral so it’s suitable for boys and girls, plus it’s much cheaper and has the same rating. Many kids love playing doctor and since the Disney show, Doc McStuffins, has taken off it has certainly inspired kids, including mine to play ‘time for your checkup’. The kit includes a stethoscope that actually works, blood pressure cuff, thermometer, otoscope, syringe, bandage, and a soft carrying bag to keep them in. Designed for kids ages 3 and up.

Squigz
squigzThese are definitely different. Squigz let your child take their building skills to a whole new level with little suction cup pieces that they can connect together and stick to multiple surfaces such as tables, walls, and windows. They’re just as much fun for kids to pull apart as they are to connect them. These are really neat and convenient for trips as toddlers can easily play with them while riding in the car. They are made of silicone-rubber material that is durable and suitable for children ages 3 and up.

Melissa & Doug Cook’s Corner Wooden Kitchen
wooden kitchenKitchen play sets never go out of style. I particularly like this one for several reasons. First, it’s by Melissa & Doug which manufactures award-winning toys for quality and educational value. This wooden kitchen set is built to last so it can be passed down for generations. The colors and designs make it suitable for girlsĀ andĀ boys. The compact kitchen has much to offer with a sink, a stove with 3 burners, an oven, refrigerator, a cutting board and shelves on the sides and on top. It features knobs that turn and click and a working timer without the need for batteries. Made for kids 3 years and up.

That wraps it up for my top toddler toys for Christmas this year. There were so many new and popular toys coming out that are projected to be the top sellers, but I hand-picked the ones from those lists that I thought most suitable and practical with a few classic favorites. Also check out some of our other suggested picks in our buying guides for more ideas. Perhaps your toddler will find one these items waiting for them under the Christmas tree, who knows.
