My Favorite Breast-feeding Products

Breast feeding creates a wonderful bond between you and your baby while providing the ultimate nutrition for their growth and development. Sometimes, however it can be very uncomfortable (see also my guide on proper positioning and latching on) Fortunately there are many aids that can help make the experience more comfortable for you and your baby so can focus on what really matters. Here are some of my favorite picks in breastfeeding products.

1. My Brest Friend Deluxe Pillow
Amazon ImageFor breastfeeding this is a much better pillow than Boppy. I had a Boppy that was given to me for my first child which I loved and got much use out of, but when I had my son the nurses in the NICU used this pillow to help me my first time feeding him. It wraps around your whole body and is adjustable so it gives you more support. The pockets are a nice touch for keeping essentials close at hand.

2. Bebe Au Lait Nursing Cover
Amazon ImageThis is a great nursing cover for feeding your baby while you are out and about. It’s adjustable around the neck, similar to an apron and completely covers you and baby for privacy. The top has a flexible band to allow you to see your baby while nursing and especially beneficial for getting them latched on. It is far better than trying to struggle with a blanket which can easily slip.

3. Lansinoh HPA Lanolin
Amazon ImageThis is essential for any mom that chooses to breastfeed. It protects from cracked and sore nipples. There are no additives or preservatives and it’s pure so you don’t have to worry about removing it before feeding.

4. Medela Pump-in-Style Advanced Breast Pump
Amazon ImageI have used different types of breast pumps over the course of 3 years and this one is worth every penny. If you plan on having more kids with the intention of breastfeeding this is the best quality pump out there. It has adjustable speed and suction controls and comes in its own bag that has extra pockets for storage. It is very efficient for expressing breast milk and comes with a battery pack for pumping while on-the-go.

5. Medela Quick Clean Micro-Steam Bags
Amazon ImageThese are really great to have for sterilizing your breast pump parts. Much easier than boiling everything to sterilize, you just pop them in the bag, add water, and microwave according to the directions. It’s very convenient and works well with bottles and pacifiers too. Each pack comes with 5 bags which you can use up to 20 times each so they’re a really good value as well.

6. Evenflo Disposable Nursing Pads
Amazon ImageThere will be times when you will need protection for leaking breasts. After having tried several different brands of disposable nursing pads and even reusable pads these were my favorite. They are very absorbent while breathable to let air pass through. The contoured shape fits discreetly under your bra much better than other brands.

7. Medela Nipple Shield
Amazon ImageMy hospital provided me one of these when I had a hard time trying to get my daughter to latch on. It also helps for inverted nipples or an overactive letdown. The constructed silicon adheres to the breast to make the nipple ‘stand out’ to help your baby nurse successfully. The standard size is 24mm although because women differ in size you may need the help of a lactation consultant to determine which size you’ll need.

8. Medela SoftShell Breast Shells
Amazon ImageThese are really beneficial in addition to the Lanolin for nipple soreness. The shells provide a protective barrier so your bra doesn’t rub causing further irritation. The shells are made with a silicone opening that fits comfortably on the breast with vented covers that allow for air-flow. They also include little foam inserts for absorbing leakage.

9. Nature’s Way Fenugreek Capsules
Amazon ImageThese are helpful if you experience supply issues. Mother’s Milk Tea, which also contains Fenugreek, helps as well but the taste does take some getting used to. These are just capsules that you can take with a glass of water so there’s no preparation required. Be prepared to pump frequently to prevent clogged milk ducts once your milk supply begins building up.

10. MilkScreen Breast Milk Alcohol Test Kit
Amazon ImageThis is not really a necessary breastfeeding product but it is useful for the breastfeeding mom who likes to enjoy an occasional glass of wine. Typically, you can breast feed after one hour of consuming one glass of wine but this can be tricky as wine glasses vary in size so you may need to wait a little longer for a larger glass. These strips give you better security of knowing when it is safe to presume nursing as it detects the amount of alcohol in breast milk.

All moms hope for breastfeeding to go as smoothly and natural as possible. If you do experience issues commonly present when nursing these are a few breastfeeding products that can help to ease discomfort and provide added convenience for you and your baby.
